From the Visayan Daily Star (Jun 28): Guihulngan brgy head shot by NPA men dies
Newly-elected barangay chairman Mike Jakosalem of Humay-Humay, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, who was shot by communist rebels, who raided his residence on June 12, died Sunday at a hospital in Cebu City, 12 days after fighting for his life, police chief Supt. Mario Baquiran reported last night.
Jakosalem sustained a gunshot wound in the head, during the raid in Brgy. Humay-Humay, Guihulngan City.
The nephew of Jakosalem, identified as Lenmar Cabasag, was killed during the raid.
The NPA Leonardo Panaligan Command claimed responsibility for the death of Cabasag. But the rebel group denied that they strafed the house of Jakosalem, claiming that a firefight ensued only after a member of the group of the barangay chairman fought back.
Baquiran said they are now coordinating and trying to convince the family of Jakosalem to pursue charges against the suspects, following admission of the NPA that they were behind the killings.
Rebel spokesman Ka JB Regalado alleged that Jakosalem was an “agent” of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, that he also linked to the killings of drug surrenderers, and allegedly maintaining armed goons, among other accusations.
Baquiran vehemently debunked rebel allegations that Jakosalem involved in illegal drugs.
The NPA claimed that they had seized four .45 caliber pistols, a browning shotgun, eight handsets and three cellular phones during the raid on the house of Jakosalem.
