PRO-9 steps up security amid NPA threats

From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 25): PRO-9 steps up security amid NPA threats

The Police Regional Office in Region 9 (PRO-9) has strengthened security in areas in the region following imminent threats from the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.

This came after President Rodrigo Duterte cancelled the talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) due to continuous attacks by NPA against state forces.

President Duterte also cited the NPA ambush of a police vehicle in Barangay Tikalaan, Talakag, Bukidnon, on November 9, which resulted to the death of a four-month old infant.

Police Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, PRO-9 director, on Friday disclosed the areas they are closely watching are in the borders of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur towards the boundary to Misamis Occidental.

Supt. Beltran said they have doubled the conduct of checkpoints to deter possible attacks from the NPA rebels.

One of the areas that reported heavy NPA presence is the Baganian Peninsula, situated in the boundaries of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte.

The police official said they are closely coordinating with the different military units to ensure the security of the civilians in the region.
