Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs says Imran Kassim has 'harbored the intention to join the pro-ISIS militant groups that had invaded Marawi City in southern Philippines'

Police in Singapore have arrested a Singaporean man for "terrorism-related" activities, after he showed intent to join the clashes in Marawi City in the Philippines.

Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement that 34-year-old Imran Kassim, who was arrested on Thursday, September 7, tried to join ISIS in Syria at least twice, then tried to join groups that pledged allegiance to ISIS instead.

Kassim "previously wanted to join the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), which is engaged in an armed struggle to establish an Islamic state in southern Philippines."

The Ministry added, "Since May 2017, he has harbored the intention to join the pro-ISIS militant groups that had invaded Marawi City in southern Philippines." (READ: Government throws out last-minute negotiations with Maute)

Prior to this, Kassim also said he was "prepared to attack Singaporean Armed Forces (SAF) personnel deployed in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, or hold them as hostages to demand ransom from the Singapore Government."

The ransom money would then be given to ISIS to further finance the group.
