Peoples Republic of Vietnam Ambassador to the Philippines Ly Quoc Tuan met with Philippine Navy Flag-Office-In-Command Vice Admiral Ronald Joseph S Mercado on August 23 at Navy headquarters toe extend his country’s gratitude for the successful rescue operation for Vietnamese kidnap victim on August 20 in Basilan.

“You have the commitment of the Philippine Navy and the armed forces. In spite of our efforts right now in Marawi, we are not abandoning all our efforts in Jolo, Basilan, and Tawi-tawi in rescuing the kidnap victims,” Vice Admiral Mercado said during the event.

Do Trung Huiqe was rescued by the combined forces of Joint Task Force Basilan through Naval Task Group Basilan and Naval Task Force 61 from the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) last Aug. 20 in Mataja Island, Basilan.

He is a crew member of MV Royal 16.

“The Vietnamese sailor, along with other five crew members of said bulk carrier, was abducted by Abu Sayyaf bandits on Nov. 11, 2016 off the waters of Coco Island, Basilan, ” the Philippine Navy said.
