From Update.Ph (Mar 17): AFP command securing West Philippines Sea celebrates 41st anniversary

The Puerto Princesa-based Western Command (WESCOM), the military formation tasked to defend Palawan from internal and external threats, celebrated its 41st founding anniversary Friday.

“For 41 years, WESCOM has always been on its dynamic obligation for serving the community with unselfish services. Serving the Palaweños has been a real honor and we, in Western Command are very grateful that we are all committed with heart to provide excellent service in protecting and securing the territory and people with the help and guide of our Almighty,” WESCOM head Lt. Gen. Raul L. Del Rosario said in a statement.

He added WESCOM will continue conducting sustained air, land and naval operations in order to maintain peace and order and to support socio-economic development and environmental preservation in the province of Palawan as a whole.

WESCOM was established as a unified command on March 15, 1976 pursuant to GHQ LOI 1/76 “SERPENS’ with the Philippine Marines as the first unit placed under its operational control under Project “Kaunlaran” of the Philippine Navy together with the Composite Tactical Group of the Philippine Airforce based in Puerto Princesa City.
From then on, WESCOM grew rapidly in response to the changing national security requirements, thus, in 1988, WESCOM was redesigned as an Area Command.
