From the Free Malaysia Today (Sep 11): Tri-nation joint patrols in Sulu Sea soon
Times and area of patrols to be determined, system will be based on coordinated patrols in Straits of Malacca
TAWAU: Joint patrols in the Sulu Sea by Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines could be carried out soon, defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein said yesterday.
He said Malaysia’s initiative was supported by the two neighbouring countries and was timely to mitigate the problem of transnational crimes, human trafficking and kidnappings.
Discussions between the three countries would be held to determine the time and areas for the patrols, which will be based on coordinated patrols in the Straits of Malacca.
“I have already met my counterparts from Indonesia and Philippines at the Trilaterial Meeting in Bali in early August to discuss further on the best methods for strengthening security in the Sulu Sea."
“Based on the successful coordination of joint patrols of the waters, air surveillance and sharing intelligence for eight years in the Straits of Malacca, it is particularly suitable to implement it in the Sulu Sea,” he said.
Hishammuddin said the next meeting with the Philippines and Indonesia would be held from Sept 29 to Oct 1 in Hawaii.
“Every development and discussion of new ideas with our colleagues and leaders of this country will be conveyed from time to time including on the next meeting which is expected to take place in early November,” he said.
