With the expected arrival of the BRP Andres Bonifacio
(ex-USCGC Boutwell) in November, the Philippine Navy (PN) will now have more
dedicated hulls for maritime security missions and sovereignty patrols.
This was disclosed by PN acting public affairs office chief
Cmdr. Marineth Domingo in a message to the PNA Monday when asked what
capabilities will be boosted by the arrival of the country's third
Hamilton-class cutter.
"BRP Andres Bonifacio (FF-17), just like the other two
Del Pilar class frigates (ex-Hamilton-class cutters), will boost the PN's
capability to address maritime security concerns and will add up an additional
vessel for sovereignty patrols," she added.
The BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (FF-15), (ex-USCGC Hamilton ) was acquired
and commissioned in December 2011 while the BRP Ramon Alcaraz (FF-16) (former
USCGC Dallas) was activated and placed in PN service in November 2013.
All three Hamilton-class cutters were acquired through the
US Excess Defense Articles program.
Domingo said the BRP Andres Bonifacio has a sailing crew of
90 officers and enlisted personnel.
The ship was formally transferred to PN service last July 21
(American time).
Domingo said BRP Andres Bonifacio prospective commanding
officer Capt. Capt. Brendo J. Casaclang and his crew will train on how to
operate the ship's systems before starting their voyage home by October.
