PA to probe alleged drug links of one of its officers

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 24): PA to probe alleged drug links of one of its officers

The Philippine Army (PA) announced that it will look into the possible involvement of one of its officers in the illegal drugs trade after the latter and his wife was caught by PNP and PDEA operatives in Cagayan De Oro during anti-narcotics operation Saturday.

Initial reports revealed that Major Suharto Tambidan Macabuat, 40, was nabbed with his wife by government operatives after short firearms and a large amount of illegal drugs were found inside their house in Cagayan De Oro City.

“We are now initiating an investigation on the matter,” PA spokesperson Col. Benjamin L. Hao said.

"The Army will not tolerate any of its personnel involved in illegal drugs operation,” he added.

Hao said the PA will also cooperate with all government investigating agencies regarding this case.

“If there is an evidence that will show Macabuat is indeed linked with illegal drug operation, he will be referred to either the military court martial or the Army’s Efficiency and Separation Board,” the PA spokesperson said.

“This is without prejudice to the possible criminal cases that will be filed against him,” he added.

Based on Army records, Macabuat is married to Haj Johairah Bagumbung Macabuat, a businesswoman. They have one child.

Macabuat was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant and was called to active duty in 2001.
