From the Philippine News Agency (May 8): No security threats for Monday's elections - AFP

With the conduct of elections just hours away, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced that it is still to detect any major security threats for Monday's electoral exercises.

This was stressed by AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla Sunday.

"(It's) all system go for the AFP (in) the conduct of the national and local elections (Monday). So far there are no significant threats that have been monitored that should be a cause for worry," he added.

"We are confident that our forces along with those of the Philippine National Police are all adequately distributed and now emplaced to help ensure the successful, safe, secure, peaceful, orderly, and credible conduct of (Monday's) elections," Padilla stressed.

The AFP spokesperson also added that they are appealing to remain alert and vigilant so the entire country work together to ensure the sanctity of the ballots in all areas come election day and after.

Earlier, Padilla said deployment of all AFP units, tasked to secure the May 9 elections, has now reached 100 percent in all of the country's 81 provinces.

"Our various units on the ground are active in providing convoy escort, patrols, clearing and security operations, and joint checkpoint operations with the PNP; primarily to ensure the safe delivery of election equipment in different voting areas across the country," Padilla stressed.

Bulk of AFP units deployed for security duties are placed in conflict-affected provinces like Maguindanao, Lanao Del Sur, Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
