From the Philippine News Agency (May 9): 1 dead as shooting erupts during election melee in Maguindanao town

A voter died while a dozen others were injured after nearly a hundred supporters of two local candidates clashed on a polling precinct in Guindulungan, Maguindanao, earlier today.

Authorities identified the victim as Unsay Usop, a local voter, who was also accompanying a relative to vote at the Guindulungan Elementary School at the time of the incident.

Police probers are still trying to determine the cause of the free-for-all that broke out at the school shortly before 7 a.m. today.

Several arrests were made but police is yet to determine the identity of the gunman at the ruckus.

Voting resumed an hour after the arrival of augmentation of state forces in the area.

In nearby Talitay town, masked armed men also gunned down another local resident identified Bayan Buisan around 2 a.m. today near a voting precinct in the locality.

The gunmen fled using darkness as cover for their escape.
