Mercado named WESCOM commander

From the Philippine News Agency (May 30): Mercado named WESCOM commander

Rear Admiral Ronald Joseph Mercado was appointed head of the Puerto Princesa, Palawan-based Western Command (WESCOM) during short ceremonies Monday.

He replaced Marine Brig. Gen. Elvin Hermogino was who serving as acting WESCOM commander since last April 29 following the retirement of Vice Admiral Alexander Lopez.

Mercado is the head of the Philippine Fleet which is based in Sangley Point, Cavite.

Acting Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Glorioso Miranda presided over the change-of-command ceremonies which was held at WESCOM Social Hall.

In attendance were local government officials of Palawan, Philippine National Police and other stakeholders and partners of WESCOM.

Also present are members of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1983 of which Mercado and Hermogino are members.

As this develops, AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said Mercado will still command the Philippine Fleet until his replacement is identified and appointed.

"Rear Admiral Mercado has served with distinction and has had a very colorful and progressive military career. He is considered to be among the most seasoned officers in the PN. Prior to his last two significant positions and assignments, Rear Admiral Mercado has had stints in varied command and staff positions in the Navy and the AFP General Headquarters. He has also earned his Command at Sea badge," Padilla said.

Miranda also took time to congratulate all WESCOM officers and enlisted personnel for their very successful and effective support to the recent conduct of national & local elections.

The province of Palawan was among the most peaceful election area last May 9 as WESCOM recorded no poll-related violence that day.
