From MindaNews (May 30): Armed men attack Gov. Generoso town, seize police chief

Armed men attacked the police station of Governor Generoso town (formerly Sigaboy) in Davao Oriental at around 8 p.m. Sunday and seized its police chief.

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, spokesperson of the 10th Infantry Division said the police station was overran by some 40 armed men. A policeman was wounded in the exchange of fire in this coastal town.

The police chief, Chief Insp. Arnold Ongachen, was in his quarters in the station when the armed men came.

Batchar said they have yet to receive reports on the number of firearms carted away by the armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

As of 4 p.m. Monday, the NPA has not issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.

The attackers were reported to have shouted they were from the NPA, Batchar added.

Soldiers are supporting the police in running after the armed men, he said.

A press release from the Provincial Information Office of Davao Oriental said Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, Commanding Officer of the 28th Infantry Battalion under the 701st Brigade of the Philippine Army is currently leading the assessment of the situation in the area.

Espela told MindaNews there are no missing policemen.

It said that the Davao Oriental Provincial Police Office Acting Provincial Director Senior Supt. Harry Espela and Col. Bienvenido Datuin Jr., chief of the 701st Brigade have been in constant coordination and have ordered clearing operations along the national highway leading to Governor Generoso.
