Misamis Oriental provincial command imposes heightened alert

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 7): Misamis Oriental provincial command imposes heightened alert

The Misamis Oriental police on Thursday heightened the command’s alert level in anticipation of an offensive by the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels as the May 9 elections nears.

Provincial Police Director Manuel Sukarno Alvarez has ordered all city and municipal police stations to tighten security and defense perimeters as the national and local elections draws near.

Web Bahiño, provincial police spokesperson, said that the order includes a 24/7 patrol in their areas of responsibility to secure the people, while contingency plans are also set in relation to the upcoming elections.

“We already prepared contingency plans, especially in relation to any election-related incidents so that we can immediately address any untoward problems that might happen,” said Bahiño.

The police also reported the harassment Wednesday of the road-security unit of a politician who was about to conduct an election campaign in the rebel-infested farming village of Lantad in the town of Balingasag in Misamis Oriental.

The rebels also harassed a command base of the 23rd Infantry Battalion in the remote village of Tama, Magsaysay town, Misamis Oriental on Tuesday but no casualties was reported.

Last April 3, the NPA rebels set up a region wide synchronized checkpoint in Bukidnon, Agusan Del Norte and Misamis Oriental leading to the capture of three policemen and 2 soldiers, including SPO4 Rene Rombo who is assigned at Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental Municipal Police station.
