A cleric about to enter a mosque here to perform an obligatory daytime prayer on Sunday was shot dead by someone who may have been a hired killer.
 
The victim, Imam Adzis Pasawilan Ayao, died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds.
 
Witnesses told investigators Ayao was about to enter the Ummoh Abdulkarim Mosque in Barangay Rosary Heights 10 when he was attacked by a gunman armed with a .45 caliber pistol.
 
The director of the city police, Senior Supt. Raul Supiter, said investigators are still trying to determine the possible motive for Ayao's murder.
 
Ayao was involved in da’awah (preaching) activities when he was still alive.
 
Supiter said investigators are still gathering statements from witnesses to help them identify Ayao’s killer.
