PETALING JAYA: The kidnapping of four Malaysian sailors in international waters near Semporna, Sabah is believed to have been led by a veteran cross-border criminal.

The criminal who goes by the alias “Apo Mike” is known to both Philippine and Malaysian intelligence agencies, and his gang is amongst known cross-border gangs operating in areas along the Tawi-Tawi Islands near Sabah’s sea borders.

It is believed Apo Mike, who has many aliases, is attempting to slip into the Abu Sayyaf stronghold of Jolo with the hostages, a report in The Star Online said today.

It is also learnt that the group led by Apo Mike was not working with the notorious Muktadir brothers responsible for at least half a dozen previous abductions.

On Friday night, the four Malaysians, all from Sarawak, were kidnapped in a raid by armed gunmen off Pulau Ligitan, near Semporna.

The four, Wong Teck Pang, 41; Wong Hung Song, 44; Wong Teck Chi, 39; and Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21 were crewmen on a Malaysian cargo ship that had transported timber from Malaysia to Manila in the Philippines.

The victims were taken away in a speed boat, while other crew on the boat, three Myanmar nationals and two Indonesians were left behind.
