As it celebrates its 119th founding anniversary Tuesday, the
Philippine Army (PA) announced that it has conducted 300,000 "focused
military operations" which has resulted in the neutralization of 743
rebels, terrrorists and lawless elements.
Neutralization in military parlance means killing, arrest or
surrender.
These operations began March 2015 up to this date.
PA commander Lt. Gen. Eduardo Ano said these figures can be
broken down into 595 New People's Army (NPA) rebels; 82 Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG)
terrorists; 10 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and 56 Jemaah
Islamiyah facilitators of the Maute Group.
Included in this toll is BIFF leader Mohammad Tambako, ASG
leader Abdul Basit Usman and the NPA commanders Adelberto Silva and Leoncio
Pitao alias 'Ka Parago'.
In the same operations, Army troops also recovered five
crew-served weapons, 171 high-powered firearms, 119 low-powered weapons from
these threat groups.
In the same period, in line with its community engagement
missions, the PA conducted 50,000 civil-military operations, Bayanihan team
activities and stakeholder engagements which resulted in 327 barangays being
declared "cleared of insurgent influence".
In closing, 555 environmental activities were also conducted
by Army troops in line with their ecological protection missions.
