Army, PNP hunting down gunmen in ambush of DPWH-12 vehicle that hurt driver in Maguindanao

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 17): Army, PNP hunting down gunmen in ambush of DPWH-12 vehicle that hurt driver in Maguindanao

Police and military forces are hunting down gunmen who strafed a government vehicle along the Cotabato-Sultan Kudarat national highway that wounded a government employee Thursday morning, the Army said.

Lt. Colonel Edgar Delos Reyes, commander of the 34th Infantry Battalion, said identified the victim as Virgilio Agad, 56, driver of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-12), who was hit in his left foot and is now undergoing treatment at the Maguindanao provincial hospital in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao.

Delos Reyes said Agad was driving a DPWH-owned Toyota Innova heading for Koronadal City from Cotabato City to attend a Christmas Party along with four others when gunmen opened fire in Barangay Meta, Datu Unsay, Maguindanao at 11:40 a.m.

“Despite the injury, Agad managed to drive the car away from killing zone,” Delos Reyes said in a report.

Motive of the incident remained unclear and police and military investigation is still on going on.

The scene of the strafing is a well known bailiwick of lawless Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).
