Proposed BBL not just a document, Ferrer says

From ABS-CBN (Dec 17): Proposed BBL not just a document, Ferrer says

The hard work continues for the passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), according to government peace panel chair Miriam Coronel-Ferrer.

In a statement on Thursday, Ferrer commended the House of Representatives for concluding the period of interpellation on the BBL on its last day of session for 2015.

"The end of this legislative phase is an important step in our quest to eventually pass the needed legislation that would establish an enhanced and more representative and accountable autonomous government in the Bangsamoro," said Ferrer.

She said she is confident that they will be able to achieve national consensus on the importance of the road map that they have set out in the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) and effectively, permanently end the armed conflict between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

"The hard work continues. In this Season of Peace, we ask that we re-charge our energies and prepare for the critical period of January 18 to February 5 when Congress resumes sessions on the Bangsamoro Basic Law," she said.

"The proposed law on the Bangsamoro is not simply a document, nor is it dead. It is about charting a better future now, not later, for our country, with respect and dignity for all, regardless of faith or ethnicity," she added.

Congress is going on a Christmas vacation from December 19 to January 18. It only has three weeks from January 19, 2016 to February 5, 2016 before it goes on another break for the 2016 election campaign from February 6, 2016 to May 22, 2016.

"As the saying goes, let us not do tomorrow what we can do today. The delay may not matter to those who live outside of the conflict areas but it matters a lot to the people in the region who have been most affected by the conflict," said Ferrer.
