6 soldiers, 1 civilian wounded in landmine explosion in Iloilo

From the Manila Bulletin (Dec 16): 6 soldiers, 1 civilian wounded in landmine explosion in Iloilo

Bacolod City – Six army soldiers and a civilian were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) used as a landmine exploded in a populated area along the highway of San Joaquin, Iloilo, at about 3:50 a.m. of Dec. 14.

The civilian was identified as Bryan Servano who is now confined at the Guimbal hospital. He was in a house near explosion.

Lt. Col. Enriqueto Deocadez Jr., Commanding Officer of 82nd Infantry (Bantay-Laya) Battalio based in Miag-ao, Iloilo reported that his troops were heading to Antique on board two military trucks when 10 men believed to be members of the NPA detonated an IED.

The soldiers sustained minor injuries and are now in stable condition and are back to duty after they were treated as out-patients in a hospital in Guimbal, Iloilo.

In a separate incident, a group of armed men believed to be NPA members burned several heavy equipment in a mini-hydro project in Igbaras, Iloilo at about 8 p.m., Dec. 13.

Reports said the New People Army bandits barged into the project site of Century Peak in Brgy, Passi and at the dam site in Brgy. Igcabugao and burned seven  trucks, an Isuzu Elf and three  backhoes and carted away a shot gun and a cal .38 revolver of the security guards.

Col. Eric Uchida, Commanding Officer of 301st Brigade said “We join the local government officials, civil society organizations, and the peace-loving people of Iloilo in strongly condemning these treacherous acts. This is a brazen disregard of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) which the Communist group is a signatory. Stop the use of landmines because it is illegal and they pose a significant threat to civilian populace.”

Maj. Ray Tiongson, head, Division Public Affairs Office (DPAO) reported that the burning incident in Igbaras, Iloilo, was a result of the company’s failure to give in to the extortion demands of the  Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP-NPA).
