Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. recently said that the House leadership is flexing its muscles to pass the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law after President Aquino called anew for the lawmakers to pass the measure that will create an autonomous political entity for the Muslims in
In a report
by Manila Bulletin on November 10, the leader of the Lower Chamber mentioned
that Aquino reminds them about the BBL every time they talk.
Belmonte
said they are doing their best now that Congress has 28 session days to approve
House Bill 5811 or known as the Basic Law for Bangsamoro Autonomous Region
(BLBAR).
The Speaker
disclosed there are still 15 lawmakers have yet to interpellate on the measure.
Peace
advocates, diplomats, business communities and various stakeholders have been
calling the Congressmen and Senators to pass the BBL in accordance to the
signed peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front.
Despite the
comments of the surviving crafters of the 1987 Philippine Constitution that the
proposed legislation is adherent to the constitution, there are lawmakers that
have manifested their opposition to some provisions of the draft BBL for so
called questions on its constitutionality.
The MILF
leadership has said that it will still go with the peace process and deal with
the next administration should there will be no BBL achieved during President
Aquino’s stint.
The Front,
as representative of the Bangsamoro people, had earlier said it will not accept
a diluted BBL for it will not address the real problems of the Muslims in the
country.
