Troops intercept Improvised Explosive Device in Basilan

From the Philippine News Agency (Oct 2): Troops intercept Improvised Explosive Device in Basilan

The military forces have thwarted another possible bombing incident in the nearby province of Basilan, an official disclosed Friday.

1Lt. Sally Magno, Joint Task Group Basilan (JTGB) information officer, said the troops from the Army’s 18th Infantry Battalion intercepted a multi-cab carrying three liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks that turned out to be an improvised explosive device (IED).

The IED was intercepted around 5 a.m. Friday in Barangay Bohe Suyak, Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan province.

Magno said the 18th IB troops were conducting checkpoint when they flagged down a multicab vehicle loaded with three LPG tanks.

She said the driver jumped off the multicab and ran towards Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo while the troops were inspecting the vehicle.

Magno said the troops have discovered that the three LPG tanks were fashioned out as an IED.

She said that Col. Rolando Joselito Bautista, JTGB commander, has deployed a team of explosive ordnance demolition (EOD) that disrupted the IED and cleared the road to enable the commuters to pass by the area unharmed.

She said investigation is ongoing to determine the people behind the transport of the IED and its target.

The IED was intercepted a day after a roadside bomb exploded and hit a convoy of Vice Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon of Isabela City, Basilan.

Ajibon escaped unscathed although the vehicle he was riding was damaged during the blast but three of his companions and a city government employee were killed while 11 others were wounded.

Ajibon was on the way home when the bomb, placed on a tricycle parked at the side of the road, exploded around 1:10 p.m. in Barangay Sunrise, Isabela City.
