Muslim rebel group blamed for Philippines bus explosion which killed an 11-year-old girl

From the Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) (Sep 19): Muslim rebel group blamed for Philippines bus explosion which killed an 11-year-old girl

An eleven-year-old girl has died and 32 others have been injured in a passenger bus explosion in the southern Philippines city of Zamboanga.

Philippines police said the local terrorist group Abu Sayyaf was responsible for the blast.

Police believe the group was attempting to extort money from the bus company which may have rejected the terrorist group's blackmail attempt.

Investigations show the bus company owners received threats prior to the bombing.

Five men found in possession of alleged bomb-making materials were arrested following the explosion.

Local media reported a homemade bomb was placed under a bus seat and it exploded at a bus terminal near a Zamboanga market.

Authorities offered reward money of $US4,300 for information leading to the suspects.

Police say the Abu Sayyaf is behind kidnap-for-ransom and extortion activities to raise funds, and is believed to be holding nine foreign and local hostages.

The group was recently declared a terrorist group by a Philippines court.
