From the Philippine Information Agency (Sep 17): AFP conducts assessment of CAFGU performance

An assessment on the concept and significant accomplishments of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) as force multipliers of the government troops was conducted by representatives from the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) last Sept. 7 at Camp Gen. Macario Peralta, Jr. in Jamindan town.

The initiative aimed to recognize and evaluate the auxiliary unit’s intelligence support, involvement to peace and order as well as contribution to development in the locality and counter – insurgency efforts in the 3ID’s area of operation.

During the assessment, a program and engagement between the military personnel and invited guests from the local government units, Philippine National Police, civil society as well as non government organizations and academe and business sectors to present the CAFGU concept and operational accomplishments and further analyze its effectiveness in the from the viewpoint of the civilian populace.

Its members were issued and allowed to carry firearms only for defense while serving as a support group of the soldiers at the grassroots level.

3ID commander Maj. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero said that the joint assessment paved way to also inform the various sectors on the significance of the CAFGU system as a component of territorial defense and public safety.

Civilian guests also freely shared their experiences, observations and opinions about the prevailing CAFGU issues and concerns as prompted by the evaluators from the AFP and Philippine Army headquarters.
