Cop hurt in NPA ambush in CamSur

From GMA News (Apr 1): Cop hurt in NPA ambush in CamSur

A police officer was seriously hurt in an ambush staged by communist rebels in Ocampo town, Camarines Sur, police said.

In a text message Wednesday, Bicol Regional Police Office spokesperson Senior Inspector Maria Luisa Calubaquib said PO2 Christian DJ Vibares was shot by four men armed with high-powered firearms at 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday in Barangay New Moriones in Ocampo town.

Calubaquib said the ambush occurred while Vibares was on his way from his residence at Barangay New Moriones to the Municipal Police Station of Tigaon town in Camarines Sur where he is currently assigned.

Calubaquib said the four suspects were believed to be members of New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

The police official said Vibares, despite sustaining gunshot wounds on different parts of his body, managed to retaliate, resulting in the death of one of the suspects.

Another suspect was also believed to have been hurt in the incident.

Calubaquib said Vibares was able to immediately call for help from the Ocampo police. He was brought to the nearest hospital.

Recovered from the incident site were two M16 rifles from the communist rebels.

“Follow-up investigation is being conducted by Ocampo MPS relative to the incident,” Calubaquib said.
