The Southern Luzon Command reported on Wednesday that joint military and police operatives arrested two New People's Army (NPA) rebels during an extortion attempt in Barangay V, Labo, Camarines Norte Tuesday morning.

Southern Luzon Command spokesperson Major Angelo Guzman saidthe two were identified as Hipolito Castro Despacio, 50, a resident of P-1, Barangay Malaya, Labo, Camarines Norte, and Carmelo Ebora Sicad, 35, of Barangay Mansilay, Tagkawayan, Quezon.

Two .38 caliber pistols, two hand grenades and PhP2,000 in cash were seized from their possession.

Accordingly, they identified themselves as NPA members while conducting their extortion activities.

"The cooperation of the CamNorteños in informing the authorities of this extortion activity is a manifestation of their commitment to live in a peaceful community," Southern Luzon Command head Major Gen. Ricardo R. Visaya said.
