NPA rebel, cop die in Camarines Sur ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 1): NPA rebel, cop die in Camarines Sur ambush

A policeman died at the hospital while a New People's Army member was killed on the spot in an ambush staged by the rebels on the police officer who was about to leave his residence to report for duty at Barangay New Moriones, Ocampo, Camarines Sur, on Tuesday night.

Another rebel was wounded in the incident.

Victim PO2 Christian DJ Vibares of the Tigaon Municipal Police Office died at the Bicol Medical Center while being treated by a doctor on early Wednesday morning.

Senior Insp. Malou Calobaquib, PNP-Bicol spokesperson, said Vibares was ambushed at about 7:50 p.m. while leaving his home for Tigaon MPO to report for duty.

Calubaquid said three rebels, armed with M-16 armalite rifles, suddenly fired at the police officer but the latter returned fire and asked for a backup from the Ocampo MPO whose station was near his residence.

The reinforcing officers came in time and engaged the rebels in an exchange of gunfire, hitting one of the NPA member on the head that caused his instantaneous death, and wounding another rebel.

The third NPA member was able to escape while the responding officers recovered the two armalite rifles of the NPA casualties.

The NPA had just celebrated its anniversary on March 29 and reports said that Vibares was in the rebels' list of persons marked for liquidation because he had killed rebels in several encounters while he was still assigned in Sorsogon province.

As of press time, the OMPO has not yet released the names of the two NPA victims.

Vibares' fellow police officers believe that the rebels executed the ambush right in front of his residence to finish him off for his accomplishments against their comrades in Sorsogon.
