Tribute to all Filipino patriots set on Corregidor Island on April 9

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 26): Tribute to all Filipino patriots set on Corregidor Island on April 9

As part of the week-long observance of the Philippine Veterans Week and the commemoration of the 73rd Araw ng Kagitingan with the theme, “Ipunla ang Kagitingan sa Kabataan, Ihanda ang Beterano ng Kinabukasan,” a tribute to all patriots will be held on April 9 at the Filipino Heroes' Memorial on Corregidor Island, Cavite.

This annual ceremony is done to honor all Filipino heroes, patriots, martyrs and defenders who fought and died for the country’s freedom and liberty –- from the time of Lapu-Lapu to the Philippine Revolution against Spain, the Filipino-American War and World War II.

It also honors Filipino defenders who fought in the Korean War, Vietnam War, veterans of military campaigns, members of humanitarian contingents to other countries and modern-day veterans who have rendered honorable military service in defending the country in times of war or peace, and in faithfully upholding their duty to preserve sovereignty and national security.

The ceremony will be attended by veterans and other guests from Manila, Bataan, Cavite and other parts of the country as well as foreign guests who will be ferried by the vessels of the Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard and M/V Sun Cruiser.

The program features the “Tolling of Bell” by a veteran while a youth representative recites a pledge extolling those who have sacrificed their lives for their love for the Philippines and vowing to keep the flame of patriotism ever burning in the hearts of Filipinos of all generations.

After the program, guests will be given a guided tour around the historic place via "tramvia" (rail vehicles), including a lights-and-sound show at the Malinta Tunnel.

The annual observance is pursuant to Executive Order No. 23, Series of 1987 that declared April 9 of every year as a national holiday for the observance of Araw ng Kagitingan and Proclamation No. 466, Series of 1989 that designated the period April 5 to 11 of every year as Philippine Veterans Week to promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideas, and deeds of Filipino war veterans as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth of the land.

The Technical Working Committee provides free ferry ride, program attendance, lunch, guided tour and lights-and-sound show to members of the media who will cover the event.
