A policeman was hurt when the convoy of the Agusan del Norte governor and Nasipit town mayor was ambushed by an armed group at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, in a remote village of Nasipit town, this province.

In an interview with the chief spokesperson of the police regional headquarters here, PSupt. Martin M. Gamba, it was gathered that Agusan del Norte Governor Maria Angelica Amante-Matba together with Nasipit town Mayor Enrico Corvera came from a graduation and turnover rites of a school building at Sitio Mimbahandi, Barangay Camagong, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte when they were waylaid.

Gamba said that the governor, Mayor Corvera and party were on their way back to the capitol when they were fired upon by the armed men believed to be communist rebels.

It resulted in the wounding of PO1 Vincent Salvador Doubuzet, a personnel of the Agusan del Norte Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC).

Doubuzet was among the joint police escorts composed of men from the Agusan del Norte PPSC, Nasipit Municipal Police Station and Agusan del Norte Provincial Police under PSSupt. Rommel Francisco D. Marbil.

Doubuzet was rushed to a hospital here in Butuan City and is now in stable condition, while the police escorts successfully extricated safely Governor Amante, Mayor Corvera and party out of the area, Gamba said.

A hot pursuit operation is now being conducted by the police and military teams against the perpetrators, according to Supt. Gamba.
