From Tempo (Mar 26): 2 hurt in NPA landmine attack
Two civilians were wounded when an improvised land mine believed planted by the New People’s Army (NPA) went off in Monkayo town, Compostela Valley.
Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) commander Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad slammed the attack which he said clearly shows the NPA’s blatant disregard for the safety of civilians.
Col. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., Eastmincom spokesman, said the explosion occurred around noon time Tuesday in Barangay San Jose, Monkayo town.
He identified the victims as Marcelyn Domicillo, 12, and Rosalya Andaya, 58, both of Purok 13, Sitio Patong, San Jose, Monkayo, Compostela Valley.
“The patrolling troops facilitated the evacuation of the wounded civilians after this came to their attention through an information given by a concerned barangay folk,” said Brawner.
The soldiers also engaged the rebels behind the attack in a brief firefight that led to the recovery of one M16 rifle, one M14 rifle, an AK 47 rifle, radio, a motorcycle and personal belongings after NPAs scampered to different directions.
“We condemn the blatant disregard by the NPA of the safety of the communities by laying landmines in their midst. Where is their adherence to International Humanitarian Law as they always claim to respect?,” Brawner said quoting Baladad.
