From the Philippine Information Agency (Mar 6): AFP condemns NPA for landmine ambush against civilian in SurSur, 1 hurt
Lt. Col. Anastacio Suaybaguio, Jr., 36th Infantry Battalion commander of the Philippine Army (PA) in Surigao del Sur has condemned the acts of the New People’s Army (NPA) when it allegedly staged an ambush on Wednesday against a private vehicle with civilians on board using a landmine, one was hurt.
“We condemn the terroristic acts of the NPAs,” said the army official, pointing out that what the rebels did was a “violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL).”
According to Capt. Al Anthony Pueblas, battalion civil military officer (CMO), the incident took place at around 5:45 p.m. in Sitio Eges-Eges, Barangay Cancavan, Carmen town, 45 kilometers north of this city.
The vehicle coming from Madrid, a neighbor town northward, was set to deliver copra to Poblacion, Carmen, it was learned.
The victim, identified as Jimmy Nales, 16 years old and a minor at that, was immediately rushed to Madrid District Hospital for treatment, but later transferred to Adela Serra-Ty Memorial Medical Center (ASTMMC), this city.
Reportedly, the vehicle, with plate no. EMB 246 driven by Alvin Estrada Abergas, 25, is owned by a certain P03 Erlito Pia Zablas, resident of Poblacion, Carmen.
Meanwhile, Capt. Pueblas said that army troopers in coordination with Carmen Police Station immediately responded “to conduct clearing operation.”
During the police investigation, empty shells of AK47 and M16 rifles were found at the scene as well as “steel bars used as shrapnel” from a detonated landmine, he added.
