A pursuing APC (armored personnel carrier) was damaged after
being mined by fleeing Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits in Sitio Abatar, Barangay
Baywas, Sumisip town, Basilan Thursday afternoon.
This took place at 1:15 p.m., said Armed Forces of the
Philippines (AFP) spokesman Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc.
No one was reported injured among the APC's crewmembers.
The vehicle was among the military units pursuing ASG
elements in Sumisip town. Military forces have been been hunting the ASG ever
since members of Joint Task Force Basilan encountered 50 of the bandits last
Tuesday.
Cabunoc said the APC was damaged after hitting an IED
(improvised explosive device) reportedly laid by the ASGs.
On the other hand, he said the AFP has already unearthed
five IEDS, and captured four ASG camps in Sumisip town during Wednesday's
clearing operation which also resulted in the death of six of the bandits and
wounding of six others.
No soldiers were reported wounded nor killed in the military
operation which seek to clear the bandits from the ongoing construction of the Basilan Circumferential Road .
Artillery and airstrike were conducted by the AFP in the
ongoing campaign, he added.
