From InterAksyon (Jan 22): 2 die, 3 hurt as 'Army master sergeant' goes amok in Davao police station
Two persons died and three others wounded when an arrested suspect who had identified himself as an Army master sergeant went wild at a police detention cell in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur on Thursday, detonating a hand grenade that he hid in his pants.
The fatalities were the suspect himself and a retired policeman. The wounded were all policemen.
An initial report released by the Provincial Police Office said the incident happened inside the detention section of the Sta. Cruz Police Station shortly before noon.
The suspect was identified as Reynaldo Salang; initial reports identified the retired police officer who died only as "Bacun," who had volunteered as negotiator.
The injured police officiers were all hit by shrapnel and being treated in hospital: Police Officer 3 Rodevico Taban, a certain SPO3 Navarro and another retired cop identified as Nowi Casas.
Salang was arrested at around 10 a.m. Thursday after taking hostage a bus passenger in Barangay Poblacion, police said.
After almost an hour of negotiation, Salang peacefully surrendered and was disarmed of his caliber .45 pistol. Unknown to the arresting team, however, Salang concealed a grenade inside his pants.
Once in jail, Salang brought out his grenade and unpinned it, threating to detonate if the police do not release him.
Negotiations failed and he eventually detonated the grenade.
