Only 200 NPA rebels left in Negros - Army

From the Sun Star-Bacolod (Sep 26): Only 200 NPA rebels left in Negros - Army

COLONEL Jon Aying, commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army in Negros Occidental, said there are only 200 members of the New People's Army (NPA) left in the province.

However, the number remains the same because the rebels would immediately replace those who have been neutralized, or surrendered, killed and captured during an encounter with the military.

"We have a hardship in reducing their number because of that immediate replacement by the rebels," Aying said.

All over the country, there were about 4,000 NPA rebels as of March this year.

Aying said that for the past three years, 150 to 170 NPA rebels in the province were neutralized by the military.

He further said that one way of gaining the confidence of the masses is the military's "Winning the Peace" program which has been ongoing for the past several months.

"We are bringing service to the people so that they can feel our sincerity towards peace," Aying said.

For the past two months, no atrocities were reported in the province and 32 loose firearms were surrendered to the 11th Infantry Battalion in the Fifth District.
