Leyte guv wants sustainable livelihood program for former rebels

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 3): Leyte guv wants sustainable livelihood program for former rebels

Leyte governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla expressed his desire for former rebels to have a sustainable livelihood as he emphasized that it is one of the strategies of the provincial government to address poverty.

He said that former rebels are welcome to join the program which the provincial government intends to implement starting at the mountainous section of the province where the soil is rich for plants to grow.

The governor likewise expressed his confidence to Leyteños, including the former rebels in boosting the efforts of the government in poverty alleviation.

Aside from livelihood program, the province also provides skills development as another strategy to address poverty.

On Tuesday, the provincial government released P10,000 each to three former rebels as their basic assistance. They also received P65,000 for immediate livelihood assistance.

The amount released, according to Petilla, is monitored by personnel of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) down to the barangay level to ensure that they are properly utilized.

“They will be taught important skills to sustain their livelihood and their other initiatives,” he stressed.

Meantime, the governor pointed out that support extended to victims of typhoon Yolanda has no distinction whether they are former rebels or not.
