Police deployed in Cotabato village to stop clan war

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 3): Police deployed in Cotabato village to stop clan war

Police and Army special forces have been deployed in Barangay Kalanganan, Cotabato City following the killing of a mother-son tandem while rafting along Cotabato river Tuesday.

Supt. Rolen Balquin, city police chief, said police are digging deeper into the shooting of Saimona Abdulla Dimatingkal, 42, and her four-year-old son Saada, all residents of Timako, Kalanganan 2, Cotabato City.

Jainal Dimatingkal, the victims’ patriarch, escaped by jumping into the river when gunmen opened fire using assault rifles on Tuesday morning in what police believed was a case of mistaken identity.

Police said the victims were ordinary fishermen and had no known enemy.

Police learned that the boat owned by Jainal Dimatingkal was borrowed by a certain Yusop Wasay last week and he could have been the target of the suspects when they were waylaid Tuesday morning.

Balquin said efforts are underway to reach out to two warring clans to spare civilians in Barangay Kalanganan.

Local police also sought the help of Muslim religious leaders to mediate on the “rido” (family feud).
