AFP chief admits relief operations priority now instead of offensive vs. rebels

From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 11): AFP chief admits relief operations priority now instead of offensive vs. rebels

As the country struggles to repair the ravages caused by Supertyphoon "Yolanda", Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Gen. Emmanuel Bautista on Monday admitted that relief operations are now the priority mission in the Visayas Region.

But Bautista refused to comment on whether operations against New People's Army (NPA) forces in the area are temporarily on hold due to the ongoing relief efforts which the military is playing a major role.

"Its hard to say that the operations against them (rebels) are halted but our priority right now is rescue and relief operations," the AFP chief stressed.

He also added that all resources are focused now on the ongoing humanitarian assistance disaster relief operations.

Bautista also hopes that the NPAs will not take this time to conduct any attacks on military units conducting relief operations just like they did on government forces helping Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental residents during the aftermath of Typhoon "Pablo" in December last year.
