From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 11): 1st Infantry Division soldiers feted for gallantry during Zamboanga City crisis

The Zamboanga del Sur-based 1st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army decorated on Monday nine of its soldiers who showed gallantry in action during the 20-day Zamboanga City crisis last September.

Awarding was done at the 1st Infantry Division grandstand in Kuta Major Cesar L. Sang-an, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

The Gold Cross Medal, the third highest medal for gallantry in combat, was awarded to the following: 1st Lt. Robert Martin R. Dimailig, Sgt. George L. Neri, Cpl. Sajack P. Alam and Cpl. Ramil R. Castillon.

The recipients of the Bronze Cross Medal were T/Sgt. Eduardo B. Abog, Staff Sgt. Thuaheron L. Pangulima, Sgt. Kashir H. Hussin and Sgt. Manuel L Suarez Jr;, while the Wounded Personnel Medal was given to Sgt. Freddie C. Centenales.

The pinning of medals was presided by 1st Infantry Division commander Brig. Gen. Felicito Virgilio M. Trinidad Jr.

“The heroism and gallantry displayed by these soldiers during the Zamboanga City siege have been seen and known far beyond the four corners of our Command. Their deeds speak the nature of a fine 'Tabak' (nickname of the 1st Infantry Division) trooper -- brave, professional and always ready to serve our countrymen. We should always carry these principles in all our undertakings, for our Command, for our family and for every Filipino people," he added.
