From the Philippine Information Agency (Dec 14): AFP-8th ID celebrates anniversary with bloodletting and greening activities
As part of the 77th year anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the 8th Infantry Division based in Catbalogan City, Samar, marked the celebration with its army brothers across the nation with bloodletting and greening programs. Major-General Gerardo Layug, commander of the 8th ID, said in a statement that the bloodletting is the Army’s continuing commitment in serving the people and that the blood donation is intended for both the Army personnel’s use and the civilians’ medical needs.
The anniversary activities, held in December 1-11 was in coordination with various government and non-government agencies in Samar province namely the Philippine Red Cross-Leyte chapter, city government of Catbalogan, Regional Community Defense Group, Army Reserved Command of the Philippine Army, Samar Provincial Police Office, and other civic organizations. Captain Gene Orense, 8th ID spokesperson, disclosed that the bloodletting activity called “Dugo Mo, Buhay Ko” last December 3 at the 8th ID covered court, generated about 70 units equivalent to 31, 500 cc of blood from generous donors.
Meanwhile, the army’s environmental activity under its greening programs revealed a total of 1,500 mahogany and star apple trees planted. The activity, jointly done by about 500 military personnel, Catbalogan city government employees, Kabalikat Civicom members, and Samar Police Provincial Office Personnel, was part of the Army’s anniversary celebration.
