Killed Malaysian JI suspected 'suicide bomber'

From the Sun Star (Dec 15): Killed Malaysian JI suspected 'suicide bomber'

Police authorities are now verifying if the Malaysian Jemaah Islamiah (JI) member shot dead Friday evening here was a suicide bomber. Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Director Ronald de la Rosa identified the slain JI member as Mod Noor Fikrie Bin Abud Kahar. His Filipina wife, Annabel Nieva Lee from Sorsogon, was also arrested.

The couple checked in around 7 p.m. Friday at the Sampaguita Hotel, located along Mt. Apo and J. Camus St. here. Upon receiving an intelligence report, Dela Rosa immediately led a team and ordered the management to advise all occupants to quietly vacate the hotel. When the couple was already at the lobby, the raiding team announced the arrest.  However, the suspect resisted and raised his cellphone saying, “If you shoot me, I will explode the bomb. I have a bomb!”

The police reluctantly released the suspect who ran towards the nearby People’s Park. But security and park personnel, alarmed of some commotion, immediately locked the gates of the park where there are lots of people, not knowing what was happening at that time. The man proceeded to another area near Toriano’s Restaurant, fronting the Apo View Hotel along J. Camus St., where elements of the SWAT team shot him.

Dela Rosa said they recovered an identification card of the Malaysian and an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a backpack. He said the killed JI member was brought to the Angel Funeral parlor, while his wife was brought to the DCPO headquarters for questioning. (PNA)
