From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 6): Army to send more peacekeepers in
conflict affected Maguindanao town
The military’s 7th Infantry Battalion sent more troops to Datu Montawal town in
Maguindanao as family feud involving Moro brothers continues to sending fears to
villagers.
Col. Benjamen Hao, 7th IB chief, said the local police in Datu Montawal, has
requested for troops augmentation as sporadic fighting between followers of Datu
Montawal Mayor Utto Montawal and his heavily armed brother Andy continue to
occur.
Andy, who has about 30 armed followers, had been at odds with his younger
brother, the town mayor, over matters only known to them, authorities said.
Hao said efforts have been made by the local leaders, the police and the
military to pacify warring groups to no avail. “Mayor Montawal is very willing to sit down and settle differences with his
brother in a peaceful manner,” Hao said in a radio interview.
“But the brother, Datu Andy, could not be found when soldiers and Muslim
religious leaders were trying to reach him,” he added....
