Policeman wounded in Basilan attack

Posted to the Mindanao Examiner (Apr 13, 2023): Policeman wounded in Basilan attack

ZAMBOANGA CITY - A policeman was wounded after gunmen attacked a police barracks in the Muslim province of Basilan in southern Philippines, a known stronghold of radical Islamic militants fighting for the establishment of a caliphate in the restive region.

The raid occurred on Wednesday evening, April 12, in the town of Tipo-Tipo and wounded Corporal Naser Jain, who is assigned with the Basilan Provincial Mobile Force Company. Police on Thursday confirmed the attack and said gunmen opened fire on the barracks and fled after the shooting.

Police did not say how the gunmen managed to sneak into the town undetected and launched the attack. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the strafing, but the Abu Sayyaf group and the Dawlah Islamiya are actively operating in Basilan, about 28 nautical miles from here.

Aside from the Abu Sayyaf, the province is also a known lair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and its rival group, the Moro National Liberation Front. (Mindanao Examiner)
