Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, assisted by Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Merle Garcia, yesterday distributed the livelihood grants to 14 former rebels at the Provincial Capitol building in Bacolod City.

Pasaporte said that several of the 14 former rebels used to be NPA combatants who surrendered to the 62nd Infantry Battalion in central Negros, while others gave themselves up to the 79th Infantry Battalion in northern Negros.

They are expected to receive more assistance under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program of the government, depending on the assessment of DSWD, he added.

Gov. Lacson lauded the decision of 14 former rebels to abandon the armed struggle and live a normal life with their respective families.

He also enjoined them to help the government in convincing their former comrades who are still hiding in the mountains, to come down and rejoin mainstream society.

The 14 former rebels also received Christmas gift packs from the provincial government of Negros Occidental.
