Barangay officials surrendered loose firearms to the military in Carmen, Cotabato on July 27, 2022.

Maj. Gen. Roberto Capulong, Commander of Joint Task Force Central said seven high-powered firearms were handed over to 602nd Infantry Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Jovencio Gonzales at the Convention Hall of Carmen.

The surrender was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Philippine Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Rommel Mundala and 1st Scout Ranger Battalion led by Lt. Col. Raymond Rapi, and the local government unit of the municipality of Carmen.

Among the firearms turned over by the barangay officials to the military were 6 M1 Garand rifles and one M14 rifle.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command said the armed forces remain steadfast in supporting the Balik-Baril Program of the local government units to eradicate loose firearms in the community geared toward achieving inclusive peace and sustainable development in the western, central, and southern part of Mindanao.

“These weapons are the root causes of criminalities; hence, they must be eradicated. I urge those who own unlicensed firearms to hand them over to the authorities before you will be caught and penalized for illegal possession of loose firearms,” Lt. Gen. Rosario, Jr. added.
