A high-ranking leader of the New People's Army (NPA) and two other communist rebels were killed in a series of encounters at Barangay Tupaz, Maragusan, Davao de Oro on Sunday morning, March 27.

In its report on Tuesday, the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division (10ID) based in Mawab, Davao de Oro said the two successive armed encounters resulted in the killing of Ezequiel Cortez Daguman alias Rey, central committee member of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). He was also the deputy secretary and head of the intelligence operations of the NPA's regional operations command and southern Mindanao regional command.

Also neutralized in the gun fights were Ruel Baylon alias James, a former member of the Pulang Bagani Command and Quirino Remegio, and alias Jelly/Manoy, a member of Iskwad Baking regional operations command.

Government troops were able to recover three M4 rifles, one M16 A1 rifle, one AK-47 rifle and two M203 grenade launchers from the site of the clash.

Also seized during the operation were several 40mm high-explosive ammunition, an anti-personnel improvised explosive device, personal belongings, medical paraphernalia and subversive documents with high intelligence value.

Daguman has existing warrants of arrest for kidnapping and serious illegal detention, double murder, robbery with violence, serious illegal detention and murder.

Maj. Gen. Nolasco Mempin, 10ID commander commended the troops of the 1001st Infantry Brigade under Brig. Gen. Jesus Durante 3rd for another accomplishment and for their relentless push to clear more grounds from communist terrorist group influence, especially in Davao de Oro.

"Your Agila Troopers will continue to pursue the remaining communist NPA terrorists in Southern Mindanao, and will not rest until the whole area of 10ID will be free from the presence of the CPP-NPA-NDF," Mempin said.
