Ending local armed conflict by 2022 'realistic,' says Sobejana

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana has described as "realistic" President Rodrigo Duterte's goal to end local armed conflict before his term ends in 2022.

Sobejana said security forces will meet the deadline of the President if there is unity between government forces and the public in pushing for the program of the government against insurgency.

“Hindi imposibleng makamit natin ang kapayapaan at katahimikan bago matapos ang termino ng ating Pangulo,” he said on The Mangahas Interviews that aired on Monday.

“Realistic [ang goal] for as long as magtulungan tayo,” he added.

According to him, only around 3,500 armed rebels were left after decades of insurgency in the country.

Sobejana said that insurgency was rooted from economic issues, pointing out that poverty is driving many people into joining rebel groups.

He said the government is already making efforts to address poverty.

Peace negotiations between the government and communist rebels collapsed in November 2017 after Duterte lamented what he said were continued attacks by rebels on troops and civilians.

He tagged the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People's Army, as terrorist organizations, although the government has yet to secure a court declaration to officially outlaw the groups.

The National Democratic Front, the CPP's negotiating arm, expressed disappointment over Duterte's decision to end the peace talks with them, saying that social and economic reforms that may result from these could have benefited millions of Filipinos.
