Rebel camp discovered, war materials recovered

From the Visayan Daily Star (May 20. 2020): Rebel camp discovered, war materials recovered

The series of clearing operations conducted by the 94th Infantry Battalion in central Negros led to the discovery of an abandoned New People’s Army camp in Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City, and the recovery of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and high-powered firearms and ammunition.

Lt. Col. Angelo Guzman, 94IB commander, said yesterday that the rebel camp can accommodate about 60 personsand is fortified with running trenches and battle positions.

Guzman said an IED and ammunition for AK 47 assault rifle were also recovered at the abandoned rebel camp.

Once monitored as a lair of the communist rebels, Guzman said the camp is a marked target for 105mm howitzers and FA-50 jet bombers.

The pursuit operations against the fleeing NPA rebels encountered in previous weeks by the 94IB in Brgy. Cambudlas, Bindoy, Negros Oriental, also led to the recovery of an M-16 rifle believed to be issued to a rebel fatality, whose cadaver was not recovered in a deep ravine on April 30.

Guzman, who aired suspicions that the body of the reported slain rebel may havebeen already buried by his comrades, said that two rebels also died in the encounter, bringing to three the number of NPA casualties.

He also said that they will intensify their focused military operations in central Negros Island, aimed at destroying formations, and neutralizing identified rebel personalities.

Maj. Gen. Eric Vinoya, 3rd Infantry Division commander, said in a statement that the surrender of several NPA leaders and members in Negros and Panay is a tangible evidence of demoralization among their ranks.

Two NPA leaders recently surrendered to the 15th Infantry Battalion in Cauayan, following the surrender of a self-confessed NPA member to the 62IB in Himamaylan City, who also endorsed several high-powered firearms.

Their surrender is a confirmation of the futility of the armed struggle and of a dying atheistic ideology, Vinoya said.
