Police and military authorities in the Caraga region were saddened over the death of a 15-year-old boy who was rescued by government troopers after being wounded in an encounter against the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in the hinterlands of Agusan del Sur on May 16.

Lt. Col. Romeo C. Jimenea, commander of the Army's 26th Infantry Battalion (26IB), identified on Wednesday the wounded minor as Marjun Rocero, son of slain NPA leader Ronnie Rocero.

Rocero, identified by authorities as a vice commander of the NPA's militia unit and a vice squad leader of the Guerrilla Front 88, was killed during the May 16 firefight in Barangay Don Alejandro, San Luis town, while another NPA member was captured.

Marjun was wounded during the clash and was brought to a hospital but did not survive a surgical operation and died two days later, Jimenea said.

“He was only 15 years old and was already utilized as a child warrior by the NPA. After we found him wounded, the troopers immediately provided him with first aid and brought him to the DO Plaza Memorial Hospital in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan Sur for treatment,” he said.

In a separate statement issued Tuesday evening, the 26IB expressed sadness over the minor's death.

“It is very depressing that another individual at a young age was used for lawless activities by the CNTs (Communist NPA Terrorists). Another future was ruined and destroyed because of the wrong communist ideology that keeps on poisoning and terrorizing the locals, especially in the countryside,” the 26IB said.

It added that Marjun was “influenced by his father’s evil legacy who served as one of the underlings of Jose Maria Sison.”

Sison is the founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

“Marjun was deprived of his right to education, right to live away from harm and exploitation, and right to special protection for his physical, mental, and social development as described by the Convention of the Rights of the Child ratified by the United Nations last Nov. 20, 1989, and Republic Act 7610 or the Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act,” the 26IB said.

The military unit also urged the public to condemn the continued recruitment of minors by the NPA "that compromises the bright future of the country."

In a separate statement on Tuesday, Police Regional Office (PRO) 13 (Caraga) Director Brig. Gen. Joselito T. Esquivel Jr. expressed grief over the death of Marjun.

“We are saddened that the communist terrorists at all times shattered the hopes of many youths, destroyed many families, and killed numerous innocent people,” Esquivel said.

He reiterated that cases of attempted murder and violations to Republic Act (RA) 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and RA 9516 codifying the laws on illegal and unlawful possession, manufacture, dealing in, acquisition and disposition of firearms, ammunition or explosives, have already been filed against Eric Acita, the NPA member arrested in the May 16 encounter.

“Again, I urge all who are still in the mountains to lay down your arms and surrender peacefully. We in the government are ready to assist you in your desire to change for the better,” Esquivel said.
