The death of the two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in central Negros has brought justice to civilians whose lives were ended by the atrocities of the communist-terrorist group, an official of the Philippine Army said.
“With their neutralization, we are also expecting the dwindling of (their) criminal activities in the area,” Maj. Gen. Eric Vinoya, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said in a statement on Thursday.
The two members of NPA’s Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) were the casualties during the combat operations of troops from the 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB), based in Isabela town, Negros Occidental, in Barangay Binobohan, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental on the night of February 28.
They were identified as Edgar Bonifacio and Randy Canumay, both residents of the said village.
“Justice has been served for all innocent civilians after the neutralization of these SPARU members,” Vinoya said.
The Army official added that the development is evidence of how the troops have controlled the pace of the operational situation in Negros Island as Negrenses have been cooperating and giving them accurate information about the activities of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).
“We are now dictating the operational tempo favorable to the government security forces on the island…(This) also brought positive results to the Negrenses specifically to the victims of the communist-terrorists’ ruthlessness,” he added.
Four nights after the two NPA hitmen were killed while four soldiers were slightly wounded after engaging with the rebels during an ambush at the border of Guihulngan in Negros Oriental and Isabela town in Negros Occidental.
Troops of the 94IB were traveling on board a military truck on the road in Barangay Luz, Guihulngan when the rebels set off an improvised explosive device.
Last week, two batches of government troops have been deployed in Negros to boost the campaign to end the presence of the CPP-NPA in the island.
These included forces from the 33rd Division Reconnaissance Company of the 3rd Infantry Division from Panay and the newly-formed 14th Civil Military Operations Battalion from Cebu.
