The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday welcomed the Senate's passing of the Anti-Terrorism Act, noting that it is a way to empower and capacitate the military in protecting and securing the nation.

"The AFP is grateful to the Senate that they heeded our call for a more stringent law that confronts and defines terrorism and what constitutes it, among other new and amendatory provisions it contains,"
AFP spokesperson Brigadier General Edgard Arevalo said in a press statement.

Authored and sponsored by Senator Panfilo Lacson, Senate Bill 1083 or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2019 was approved on third and final reading on Wednesday.
Lacson claimed that with the passage of Senate Bill 1083, the Philippines will be at par with other countries in the campaign against terrorism.

Arevalo also said that the military recommits its fidelity to the promotion of human rights as well as international humanitarian law, and added that sufficient safeguards are already enshrined in the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2019 and the Bill of Rights embedded in the 1987 Constitution.
