SAN FERNANDO CITY, Feb. 24 (PIA) - - To boost the skills of army troopers on online communication dissemination, the army’s 7th Infantry Division (7ID) hosted the first mobile journalism workshop conducted in Fort Magsaysay, Palayan City, Nueva Ecija recently, according to Lieutenant Colonel Charles DZ Castillo.
Castillo, the assistant chief of staff for Civil-Military Operations (CMO) of the 7ID, said their unit had partnered with the Grassroots Uniting Mission for Christ (GUMC) led by Siegfred C. Balatan for the successful two-day capacity training for the soldiers recently
“We came up with this training due to the growing demand of responsible online interconnectivity and the vital impact of the social media in the information dissemination,” he said.
Forty-two soldiers, who were selected from the different units of the army’s 7ID covering the provinces of Regions 1, 3 and some part of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), have successfully finished the training. The soldier-participants increased their knowledge on the proper social media usage as a tool for information dissemination.
The topics discussed during the training were understanding mobile phones’ operating systems and configurations and the technical know-how of mobile journalism. The topic of biblical context on social media was included during the training to enhance the promotion of moral values.
For his part, Balatan said, “the highly interactive nature of social media separates it from the other platforms in which this is shareable in real-time and globally marketed making it a powerful force in influencing the people.”
Meanwhile, Major General Lenard T. Agustin, the commander of the army’s 7ID, cited the need for such training for the soldiers to align their communication skills to the existing mass media communication technologies while they are promoting the program of EO 70 or the whole of nation approach to end the local communist armed conflict.
“We need to equip ourselves with the online communication technologies to strengthen the timely dissemination of our activities and all development programs of the Philippine Army to achieve the ultimate goal of the EO 70, which is lasting peace, growth and development all over the country,” said Agustin.
